The book is about a boy named Auggie who is diagnosed with Treacher Collins Syndrome which causes him to have a facial deformity. The condition is very rare in real life. He is about 10 years old and has been through 27 surgeries so he can breathe, eat, hear, and more. He is going through a huge obstacle in his life by attending a regular school.
He is going through a huge a difficult step in his life due to going to school with kids that have never seen his condition before. He experiences numerous difficulties at school such as making friends, being bullied, and being accepted by kids’ parents for who he is. He overcomes all those obstacles almost by the end of his first year in school.
The book was inspired by Palacio when she was in an incident when she had gone to the ice cream shop. She was with kids at the shop when suddenly her three-year-old son noticed a girl with a facial deformity and began to cry. Palacio’s son was in fear and the author decided to flee the shop so she could protect the girl, but was also leaving avoiding her own discomfort.
The book has been created into a film named Wonder and was released on November 17, 2017. It has been rated 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is now available also on Blu-Ray and DVD in stores.
