On Friday, November 5, the Pelahatchie Chiefs hosted the Leland Cubs and also kicked off their first round of playoffs. The Chiefs came out victorious, leading the Cubs 41-14.
Currently the Chiefs are standing with an unblemished district record of 4-0, but have an overall record of 10-2 falling to the Bay Springs Bulldogs and the Scott Central Rebels.
Although there was a bit of unfriendly weather, the fans still managed to pack the stands and support the Chiefs in their run for the state title.
The fans are a big part of the Chiefs success this season. Senior football player Javian “JJ” Mckinnis stated, “The fans give us an edge that I can’t explain; hearing them yell and cheer us on throughout the game is amazing. We want to make our school and our community proud of us. That’s why we’re trying to win that ring.”
Senior football player Ahmod Johnson had a great game with a total of 162 rushing yards and 3 total touchdowns.
The result of winning the first round of the playoffs means that the Chiefs played the following week in the second round of playoffs, against the East Webster Bobcats.
Unfortunately the Chiefs fell to the Bobcats by one point, 35-36. The Chiefs started the game off rocky, ending the first half losing 24-0.
Refusing to let the Wolverines score the Chiefs made an unbelievable comeback in the third quarter and left the score at 24-14.
During the fourth quarter, the Chiefs took the lead.
With about a minute and fifty seconds left on the clock, the Chiefs scored, making the score 35-30. The Wolverines took the lead right back, leaving the Chiefs with only a matter of seconds left to score.
Unfortunately, the Chiefs were unable to score again with the remaining time on the clock, which resulted in the loss of the game.
